What is the G2 Test?
The G2 driving test is part of Ontario’s graduated licensing system. It’s the first practical, on-road assessment after your written G1 test. The purpose of the G2 test is to evaluate your basic driving skills in real-world conditions—such as stopping at lights, changing lanes, making turns, and parallel parking.
Once you pass your G2 test, you’ll receive a G2 license, which allows you to:
- Drive without a supervising driver
- Carry passengers (with some restrictions for drivers under 20)
- Drive on highways and at night
When Can You Book Your G2 Test?
You can book your G2 test after holding your G1 license for at least 12 months. If you’ve completed an MTO-approved driver education course, this waiting period is reduced to 8 months.
Here’s a quick eligibility checklist:
✅ You hold a valid G1 license
✅ Your G1 is not suspended or expired
✅ You've waited 8–12 months, depending on your driver training
✅ You’re confident in your driving skills and have practiced with a licensed supervisor
If you meet all the above, you’re good to go!
